Going Home...

Going Home...

As kitty & I were leaving the vet's office this morning, I had her inside a box -- taped shut, mind you -- only to have her little head pop out despite all of my attempts to keep her shut in it while I was driving.

Well, I finally gave up and this was how we rode home. She just sat like this the entire ride back to my house, half in the box and half out (and it wasn't because she was stuck, I promise!)... So cute, so sweet, so adorable... (just gotta excuse the funky eyes & nose -- she had to have some medicine put in them!)

Gotta give the girl some credit, she just wanted to see the sights!!!

Bed bug

Bed bug

This is my kitty, Nikki. She must love the feel of fresh, clean, dried on a clothes line sheets. Just as soon as I come down the hall with fresh, clean sheets to make a bed.........she's on top of the bed trying to play hide and seek between the sheets. Here she is peeking out at the foot end of the bed:) I usually have to call one of my kids to come get her and hold on to her while I change sheets......or I can't get the job done:)

Cat #4(a), Harar, Ethiopia, July 2009

As previously mentioned, Harari houses exist around enclosed courtyards, hidden behind walls. This cat was cautiously watching the street from the safety of an only partly-open door. I was really indecisive today, so you have three variants to choose from!

All this week, I’ll be putting up photos from my series on the cats of Harar–stay tuned!

reflections in a cat's eye

reflections in a cat's eye

A cat's vision is superior at night in comparison to humans, and inferior in daylight. Cats, like dogs and many other animals, have a tapetum lucidum, which is a reflective layer behind the retina that reflects light that passes through the retina back into the eye. While this enhances the ability to see in low light, it appears to reduce net visual acuity, thus detracting when light is abundant. In very bright light, the slit-like iris closes very narrowly over the eye, reducing the amount of light on the sensitive retina, and improving depth of field. Big cats have pupils that contract to a round point. The tapetum and other mechanisms give the cat a minimum light detection threshold up to seven times lower than that of humans. Recent studies have indicated that cats may also see better in the near infra-red spectrum than previously thought, however more research needs to be completed. Variation in color of cats' eyes in flash photographs is largely due to the reflection of the flash by the tapetum.

Cat in the Box

Cat in the Box

After i bought a new pair of boots for the up coming winter i left the empty box on the chair and when i got up in the morning my cat Mr Thomas had decided to make it his new bed in Plainville Ma.

He already seems to have moved on from the box :-)

Info:

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere on Earth.

Cats are similar in anatomy to the other felids, with strong, flexible bodies, quick reflexes, sharp retractable claws, and teeth adapted to killing small prey. As nocturnal predators, cats use their acute hearing and ability to see in near darkness to locate prey. Not only can cats hear sounds too faint for human ears, they can also hear sounds higher in frequency than humans can perceive. This is because cats' usual prey (particularly rodents such as mice) make high frequency noises, so cats' hearing has evolved to pinpoint these faint high-pitched sounds. Cats rely more on smell than taste, and have a vastly better sense of smell than humans.

Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species and use a variety of vocalizations, pheromones and types of body language for communication. These include meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting.

Cats have a rapid breeding rate. Under controlled breeding, they can be bred and shown as registered pedigree pets, a hobby known as cat fancy. Failure to control the breeding of pet cats by spaying and neutering and the abandonment of former household pets has resulted in problems caused by large numbers of feral cats worldwide, with a population of up to 60 million of these animals in the United States alone.

As The New York Times wrote in 2007, "Until recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal", but a study that year revealed that the lines of descent of all house cats probably run through as few as five self-domesticating African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) circa 8000 BC, in the Near East. The earliest direct evidence of cat domestication is a kitten that was buried alongside a human 9,500 years ago in Cyprus.

Sleeping Kitty

Sleeping Kitty

Looking up at Mittens sleeping on her high ledge in the bathroom, very close to the heater lights. She is a heat worshipper, and is always sleeping on our computers and the sound system thingy. Here she is sleeping with her head hanging off the ledge, maybe to keep her back straight like when we have our head through the massage table hole.

Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur
Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr purr purr.

Taken with iPhone 4S.
